HISTORY

Raccoon Creek Baptist Church was founded in May 20, 1837. A small group of believers gathered together near a winding creek close to the community of Stilesboro, Georgia and formed a church known as Raccoon Creek Baptist Church.

The first building was of logs on one acre on the west side of the creek. In 1840 the church was deeded two acres of land on the east side of the creek upon which our church was built. The new church was much larger than the log house with a seating capacity of around 300.

During the Civil War the church continued remarkably well. During those trying four years, the church never missed holding more than two conferences in succession. The church yard was the scene of a battle formation in May 1864, when a company of soldiers engaged in a squirmish with a vanguard of Sherman's army. On the morning of May 19, the day following the squirmish, Sherman's army reached the community of Raccoon Creek Church. For three nights the church yard and surrounding area, which was then forest, was the scene of a camping ground. They spared the church and the homes in the community and some of them are still standing today.

Sunday School rooms were built across the back of the main church building in 1956. The fellowship hall was added in June 1979 and expanded in 1996.

As a church we are truly thankful for our wonderful history and the fact that we are still moving on with the work of our Savior. We currently have around 400 members on roll.
